Social interactions can be baffling for those on the spectrum of autism. They may become easily overwhelmed or frustrated when trying to develop and sustain a friendship. What could be some of the reasons for this to happen?
THEY MAY NOT KNOW WHAT TO SAY OR HOW TO SAY IT
Conversing can be very stressful for those on the autism spectrum. Even though they may like to speak about a particular interest, they maybe too worried to do so. When people feel anxious, they may get tongue-tied or forget what they want to say altogether.
THEY MAY STRUGGLE TO UNDERSTAND BODY LANGUAGE, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND GESTURES
Children on the spectrum of autism may not realize that being in a certain proximity means that people are trying to be friendly. Also, they may find it difficult to understand why others act affable towards them, but their body language and gestures to someone else maybe different.
RIGIDITY IN THE WAY PEOPLE WITH AUTISM CAN THINK MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO COMPROMISE OR COPE WITH CHANGES IN ROUTINE
Having a routine provides predictability and comfort. It is a way of reducing anxiety. Therefore, they may struggle if other people change their minds after plans have been arranged, or turn up late. This may also mean that they may cease to see other people’s perception of situations.
THERE IS A CONSTANT EXPECTATION TO MAINTAIN THE FRIENDSHIP
Keeping in touch with friends can be difficult for someone on the autism spectrum, because they may not know how often to contact their friend. They may also worry if their friend does not message them very often as they may think that they are purposely distancing themselves.
DISCLOSING AUTISM TO PEOPLE CAN BE A HARD THING TO DECIDE
The word autism is almost always associated with a disabling condition. Many of us may not look beyond the ‘label’ and explore the many strengths of the individual.
It is incredibly upsetting if a friendship breaks down due to the disclosure of autism. This can often mean that the other person is not worth your time and effort.
