Deciphering the mind of a child with autism is not child’s play. What could be the thoughts crossing a little mind who is nonverbal and autistic at the same time?

Tiptoeing into the school gates to begin another day,

Ready to face the challenges that come along his way.

The home was where the heart was,

Albeit a little too late to return,

Neither his hair was out of place, nor did his toast have a burn.

As he swiftly made his way into a class filled with chaos,

His little feet trembled with fear, for words he was at a loss.

Far away in a corner from everyone’s prying eyes,

Lay a bench waiting to welcome him,

For private laughs and an occasional good cry.

I so want to be part of your world,

Every inch of him seemed to scream,

Going by the way things were,

It only looked like a distant dream.

Not being able to speak does not mean I have nothing to say,

I do understand but in my special way.

All I need from you

Is a lot of patience just for a little while,

Until I am courageous enough to stride forward,

And my heart finds umpteen reasons to smile.

Just as a glass is half empty or half full rhetorically,

I am as alike or similar to you,

As you perceive me to be.

Very Beautiful poem, aptly describing not only the thoughts of an autistic child, but also the thoughts of countless children, who have mental and physical dissimilarities, as compared to other majority of children. Touched my heart in a big way ❤️
